David De Concilio

David De Concilio est invité au LIER-FYT du 11 au 24 mars 2024 dans le cadre du projet FoNTES - Fostering innovative training in the use of European legal sources.

David De Concilio is a legal historian with a particular interest in the Middle Ages. He obtained a master’s degree in Law at Roma Tre University in 2018. In the same year he undertook a joint PhD in medieval history and in legal disciplines, under a co-tutelle at the University of St Andrews and Roma Tre University, within the ERC research project “Civil Law, Common Law, Customary Law: Consonance, Divergence and Transformation in Western Europe from the Late Eleventh to the Thirteenth Centuries” (CLCLCL).  After defending his thesis “Via Brocardica. The Development of Brocards and the Western European Legal Tradition (c.1160 – c.1215)”, in March 2022 he joined another ERC project as a research fellow at the University of Padua: “Migrating commercial law and language: Rethinking lex mercatoria (11th-17th century)” (MICOLL).

David is also a member of a project on “Religious precept and legal norm: history and dynamics of a foundational dialectic of Western legal civilization (4th-17th centuries)”, funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR).

In these years, he has also been a been visiting researcher at the Leopold-Wenger-Institut für Rechtsgeschichte, Ludwig- Maximilians-Universität of Munich (2021) and at the Robbins Collection, University of California, Berkeley, where he has been awarded a “Robbins Fellowship” (2022). David’s main research interests are twelfth- and thirteenth-century methods of legal argumentation and learning in the ius commune tradition and the medieval theory on legal presumptions. He am also interested in the historical relationship between law and other fields of human knowledge, like theology and literature.
